world missions

I remember a video that was played during one of my very first visits to my church. A mission team had just returned from Africa. The video was a recap of their experience. The images on the screen had me captivated. It literally took my breath away as tears filled my eyes. At that moment I knew that something like that was in my future. I knew that world mission was something that would be a part of my life.

I got my first opportunity in 2005. I went with a mission team to Chennai, India.

A trip to another nation like this changes you. I came back a different person. The things that I saw and experienced took a part in making me who I am. You see images on TV and hear stories... but until you touch is, smell it & look into the eyes of this other world... you just don't know. I often say that we all need to experience this other world. This planet would be a lot different... that's for sure. Or at least I'd like to think it would.

(each orphan had a trunk & in it was their only belongings)

India was so amazing. The people were so precious. On our visit we did manual labor at the sites of many orphanages. We also brought over book bags with personal hygiene items and a few small toys for many of the village chldren.

Most importantly we brought the message of salvation through Jesus Christ.

The children were so precious. We would sit and play with them. We didn't speak the same language... but it didn't matter. The girls would run their fingers through my hair and they loved rubbing my skin. They would feel and stare at my hands then giggle at each other. I was confused until one of the orphanage workers told us that they had never seen white people before.

Could you imagine?

I have so many stories from India to share & I plan to.

I'm going to El Salvador in about 2 1/2 weeks. I know that this trip will produce many more stories of it's own.

I'm not exactly sure what my future holds... only God does, but I know in my heart that this other world will be a part of it.

I can't wait for the adventures ahead and I also can't wait to share the stories either.

training

Maddy & I both had mission training today.

Her training in Garden Valley, Texas & mine at our church...

I love how Teen Mania (the ministry she is with) has communicated so well with us. They started a Facebook page where they post pictures and updates of her trip. They also have a 24/7 parent communications line that we can call for any reason.

(the picture Teen Mania sent yesterday after she registered)

Last night they had a worship service. I got to chat with her a bit yesterday. She was excited that the campus had longhouses. That's where she will be sleeping until they leave for Mexico.

Today she went through personal evangelism training. I also got word that she does have her luggage. Whew. The FedEx tracking system shows that her wallet should be there in the morning... right on time. So that is very good.
---

I leave for El Salvador in about 3 weeks. We started our training today. A big part of what we will be doing is street dramas. We were assigned our roles & started rehearsing today. We also went over our itinerary. Good times. Now that Maddy is off and taken care of I was able to let my trip sink in a little more. Todays session got me really excited. It's going to be good.

and she's off....

Madison's dad & I dropped her off at the airport this morning. Her flight left at 7:00a. She seemed really excited. She has landed in Texas & will stay there until Monday when they will head off, by bus, to Mexico.

She had to wear this cute little green shirt & her plastic "unattended minor" necklace.

We were standing at baggage check-in when she spotted another green t-shirt behind us. She approached the girl and found out she was going to Mexico too! She was relieved to be able to fly with someone she knew. (I was too!... it took a huge load off knowing she wouldn't be alone.)

The great thing about the unattended minor program is that we got a pass to get through security & to the terminal to wait with her. The flight attendant came out and told us that she was able to get the girls 2 seats together. I thought that was awesome. I just feel bad for whoever had to sit beside the 2 chatter boxes. :)

We were able to watch take off from the end of the terminal.

Once we got in the car... to my horror... I found her wallet (with her passport AND all of her cash) in my pocketbook! After a mild freak out moment Maddy's dad reminded me I could just overnight it to her. So I did... this morning. She will get it Monday morning. I called the mission headquarters & they said that would be ok. Then I got a frantic call from her letting me know that her luggage was left here in Richmond. Great...  I spoke with the mission rep & American Airlines has promised her luggage to be delivered before they leave for Mexico. At least she has her sleeping bag, snacks & most importantly.. her camera in her carry on.

(packing)

Two whole weeks without my Maddy-Poo. :( I'm so proud of her though. She is so brave to take a trip like this. I know it's going to be life changing.

We had a fiesta for her Thursday night with my parents, brother & a few of her closest friends. It was nice.

Friends and family also sent a bunch of sweet messages that I bound together in a little "book of encouragement" for her... something to encourage her in case the homesick blues try to creep up on her. She opened it on the airplane. She said "it made me cry". I could tell it meant a lot to her.

We have indeed had a little drama this morning... but I'm just glad that she is there safe on the ground.... now I can relax & get started on this Saturday. On the agenda: absolutely NOTHING... my favorite kind.

my little world changer

Madison participated in her youth group's 30 hours of famine tonight. It's a World Vision thing & will continue through the weekend. They are fasting & praying for the poverty of this world.

They watched some intense videos & then went to our city’s homeless area to pray for our city's poverty.

She came home talking a mile a minute.

Next week she will experience this world’s poverty first hand. The world’s poverty is like no one can explain. You may see images on TV or hear stories about the 3rd world… but until you experience it firsthand you simply can’t fathom the depth of it.

Madison came home tonight with a passion in her eye and tangible goals to make a difference in this countries poverty situation... My 12 year old little girl.

Next Saturday she will head to the airport and depart on a plane headed to a place where she knows no one. To a place she has never been. She is simply headed out on faith that God will use her to make a difference.

People may ask (& they have)… How I could send my daughter off on such a trip? My answer: This is her passion. A purpose in it for her. There has been a fire lit within her from the day she heard about the trip. She knew it was  a trip she was supposed to take.

Who am I to stop this passion?  There is a desire within her to change her world. How dare I intervene? How can I teach her to make a difference with one random act of kindness at a time & then prevent her from fulfilling her heart’s desire to touch her world for Jesus?

I can’t teach her to follow her dreams & then hinder her & fill her with fear... preventing her from from following those dreams when they present themselves.

Tonight I saw within her an all too familiar disgust for injustice & I also see her heart ache due to the lack of compassion she sees.

I look into her eyes & I see a world changer. A history maker.

This trip is going to change the lives of others in Matamoros Mexico… and ultimately I know... it’s going to change the life of a 12 year old I know... forever.

Watch out Mexico... here she comes!

doing it, more babies, missions & bark piles... and some other stuff too.

I realized that I haven't felt much like blogging lately unless my heart has been heavy... which explains the last few posts. I should lighten things up a bit with a little conversation that I had with Olivia the other day. It went something like this:

olivia: mommy, why do you & daddy always do "it"?

me: (as I try to gain composure & not let her see the panic in my eyes) what do you mean by "it"?

olivia: you know what I mean mommy...

me: no honey I really don't think I do, please explain.

olivia: ok... I'll spell it.

me: ok dear, please do spell "it"

olivia: K-I-S-S-I-N-G

me: (thank you sweet Lord!) Oh, that! Of course... mommy knows what "it" is! It's because me & daddy love each other. That's why we do "it"... you know kiss & all.

olivia: ewwww

whew!

(Olivia graduating Kindergarten!)

----------

To top things off... this morning Stephen & I were cuddling & doing "it" (kissing, of course) When Olivia busts in...

Gee Whiz... it's too early for you to be up... go back to bed dear child... is what I was thinking, but didn't have time to say because she tattles...
"mommy & daddy, Reece peed a lot in her diaper & then she sat on my head
& now I have pee on my head."

classic.

----------

Happy summer! I couldn't be more excited about this summer. No work, no school (just a little studying for the nursing entrance exam.) just me & the kiddos having a good time!
This is the life. I love being a mom so much. I think if I didn't have 3 more years of school in front of me I'd be ready to have another one.

We'll wait... for now.

----------

Maddy got her passport in the mail yesterday!!! She will be headed to Mexico on her very first mission trip in less then a month!
She is really excited. We have one last fundraiser for her this weekend.
Our 2nd yard sale. good times.

I'm leaving for El Salvador about a week after she gets back. Just got an email saying we are going to visit some orphanages, women's prison & feeding centers. I'm excited!

Two life changing trips, I'm sure of it.

----------

Got some changes coming in our lives soon. If you know me or have read my blog for a bit you know how I struggle with decisions.
I'm praying and seeking God... He'll lead me the right way. He always does.

I some times wish that He would just reveal the entire picture all at once... He's smart like that & doesn't. Step by step... it's what the faith walk is all about. I trust you Lord. Take my hand daddy & lead me... I know you won't fail me....

More to come on that in due time.

----------

Got any fun summer plans?

(Olivia & I make bark piles while we wait for Madison to ride roller coasters...
it doesn't take much folks.)

sharing hope

I spent Saturday downtown with Stephen & some off the YAM crew. We collected coats, blankets, hats, scarves and gloves from our church's congregation. They made it happen in a big way... as they usually do!

We sat up shop along the edge of Monroe Park... a local homeless hang-out in the city. They seemed really blessed by everything we had to offer. One man held his new pair off gloves up to Heaven, closed his eyes and thanked God for them. I think he'd spent too many frigid nights with cold hands recently.

Another lady came through so happy to have a new jacket. She kept saying... "I can't believe some of these still have the tags on them." I wish I had a picture of her pretty smile to show you.

Most of the pictures I took were incognito style. A lot of them I snapped as the camera hung around my neck. I didn't want to be invasive. This one however was asked for. When he saw my camera he struck a pose.

YAM usually spends at least one Saturday a month down at the park. Coffee and doughnuts have been the recent favorite thing to share. Stephen has been the one to go lately. I remembered Saturday how much I enjoy my time down there with my homeless friends. I really need to go more often(.)

I ran into one of my buddies that I met last time I was down there. He shared with me during our last visit that he used to have a successful career, nice home, awesome car... he was living the middle class American life. Then because of a few bad decisions he ended up on the street. This time he seemed a little harder and much more reserve than I remember him being the last time. I remembered our recent chat about his conversion out of the Jehovah Witness religion. When we last talked he was still kind of up in the air about his beliefs in God. As I approached him this time he immediately made it very clear that he didn't want my Jesus. He shared several stories and his theories on why Jesus wasn't real. He's been hurt a lot.... many times by christians. His perception of Jesus has been tainted. He didn't understand why there could be so much hurting and injustice in the world if my God was real and especially if my God was a loving God. It didn't matter what I said.... he'd heard it all. He'll come around. We'll pray for now and just be a friend. We're also working hard to find him a job and help him sell an old non-running car that he has. He said that if he could sell the car, the money he would make (about $1500) would give him the opportunity to get a temporary place to stay, clean shave and enough resources to obtain a fairly decent job. He helped me realize that when you are living in poverty with no shelter and barely any food you are in complete survival mode. Daily your thoughts are on the sheer basics of life, much less finding a decent job. His daily focus: finding a safe, dry place to rest his head and enough food to make it to the next day... He's been held at gun point once and almost got stabbed last week.

I also met two younger guys... probably early 20s. They asked me to pray that they would find a warm place to sleep. Our city has a pretty good homeless system in place. Unfortunately, though there are still several hundred people without shelter every night. They told me that someone had stolen their bags, with their IDs... and apparently you can't get shelter without an ID... huh? Now they have to wait 2 to 3 months for their new IDs to come in.

It's going to be really cold by then.

Statistics show there are thousands of homeless people in our city... just our city.

Reasons for homelessness:
-foreclosure
-eroding work opportunities
-decline in public assistance
-lack of affordable health care
-domestic violence
-mental illness
-addiction disorders
(info found at "National Coalition for the Homeless" website)

They may not have all the answers to end homelessness in our city, but once a month these guys venture down to the park to show love... the Jesus kind of love...

a prayer, a shoulder, a listening ear, a smile, some respect and dignity...
mostly hope

I found this helpful blog post to share... Ways to help the homeless. Take time when you can to chat with and pray for the homeless.
They could really use a friend!

all about the small things

Stephen finished the NYC trip documentary! He is still working on breaking it down into 10 minute segments for YouTube... but he pulled my interviews for me & you can watch it here.

When I got back from New York I was ready to conquer the world with the love of Jesus. I got a better understanding of His love while I was there. The awesome thing is that it seemed to be a central theme for the entire team. Although I have this intense feeling to want to change my world, I'm a bit overwhelmed... not knowing where to begin.

Then I was reminded that all I need to do is listen & comply. He will lead & guide me. The first thing we knew we had to do as soon as we got home was start a small group about the love of God & practical hands on ministry training for the young adults. Check... we began our "Reach for the Scars" launch last night with a movie called The Cross (a MUST see for EVERYONE). I asked the member analyst on our church staff to pull all young adults who have attended our church in the past 6 months & we did a mass mailer to about 280 young adults. I created the postcard & included the movie night date as well as a blurb explaining what YAM is & how they can get connected. We had some new faces last night... not as many as I had anticipated, but that's OK because I know God will bring who needs to be there. It started last night with the movie & we will begin a book study on October 2nd.

We also knew that we wanted to have some sort of city outreach in September. This worked out lovely... before we even got home from New York our ministry coordinator sent Stephen a text letting him know our Pastors wanted the young adults to be involved in a big outreach effort that will be taking place on Sept. 18th downtown! Woo hoo! It's going to be held at a large park in the city. This is a great location because there are a lot of homeless people (it's the same place we did "30 Hours of Hunger" earlier this year)... it's also a place where a lot of college kids hang out... there are fraternity & sorority houses near the park. We are promoting it with a flyer blitz that will take place next Friday. The YAM band will play music and then our pastor will share the gospel message. The congregation will help by serving free food & just loving on people. That worked out great, huh?

Last night was perfect! We were struggling to find the right movie to show. It came down to the last minute & our coordinator suggested "The Cross"... we hadn't even seen it yet. We watched it for the first time with everyone last night & it could not have been more perfect... it expressed everything that has been on our hearts! Awesome how God worked out those details!

Some of the ideas we have for the upcoming months are... a homeless winter coat drive, nursing home visits, streets dramas, children's hospital visits, half way house visits... another thing we got from the trip is the importance of relationships. A lot of our "most memorably moments" had a name attached to them. We met so many wonderful, precious people there... and I can't wait to meet some more. It's just so awesome to see how God is moving in this ministry.

After the movie I shared a little from my heart with the young adult. Some of what I talked about...

I was reading in Mark the other day where Jesus said... "if anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." (Mark 8:34) I've heard that preached before & I get the gist of what He's saying, but I prayed... "Lord, show me what that really means. I want to know exactly what you mean by this because I don't want to miss it!"

Then I thought about what the cross must have meant to our Heavenly Father. The cross held His dying, beaten, wounded son. A son that He sent for that very purpose... to die for us! I realized that to God the cross must represent sacrificial, unconditional love. God so LOVED the world that He GAVE His only begotten son. That gave me a better understanding of what the cross needs to represent in our lives. We need to love people with the love of God... self-sacrificing, unconditional, non-judgemental love. After all we are God's hand's & feet here on earth... right?

I ended with this quote from Mother Teresa... "We can do no great things, only small things with great love"

We may not be able to conquer the entire world... but we certainly can make a huge impact in OUR own individual worlds!

What small things do you have for us today Lord?

Saturday, August 8

quick stop @ home

I'm back from NYC!

I had every intention of Twittering (I'm allowed to make up my own words on my own blog, right?)  while I was on the trip but every time I thought to tweet I just couldn't put into a simple status the tremendous things that were on my heart. A simple tweet just wouldn't do. So I will wait & write a blog soon about my experience. I knew God was up to big things, but it was bigger & better than I could have imagined... God seems to do that sort of thing most of the time! As I expected my world has been rocked out of its cozy little warm spot of complacency.

I come home with a strong urgency to share the love of God like I've never done before. I read in a book on the way home... "you can't win the masses to Christianity until you begin to live it." I want to live it... not just go through the Christian motions. I'm ready for something bigger & better. God is stirring something brand new & wonderful in my heart. I come home with a new appreciation for relationships... not only with others, but a new, more intimate relationship with my Savior as well.

So many details to come.

The team arrived in Richmond tonight around 7:30p. My parents picked us up from the train station tonight & brought us home to a big surprise. Mom (with a little help from my dad & brother) cleaned the entire house for us. Not just cleaned but purged closets, scrubbed floors, organized "hot spots" that I've been dreading to even think about organizing myself. What a sweet wonderful treat to come home to! She's the best... & not just because she cleans my house & weeds my garden! Stephen & I will head out in the morning to Kentucky. I miss the girls so much & can't wait to see them. I would be in bed right now but I promised the team I'd post pictures on Facebook so they wouldn't have to wait an entire week. It's taking forever though so I'm going to sleep while they load.

Good night!

zoomin'

Is it just me or is this summer zooming by. It’s so cliché, but so true… time flies when you’re having fun... and fun we are having! This summer has been so wonderful. I have really enjoyed my kiddos (& everyone else's for that matter) this summer!
I’m looking at the calendar & realizing that we have about 5 weeks left before school starts back. 2 of those weeks we will be out of town!
Our New York City Missions trip is coming up the 1st week in August (we leave NEXT weekend... woo hoo) & then we are going on family vacation. You heard it right folks… family vacation for FREEEEE (OK, that was an Adam Sandler in Bedtime Stories impression… get it?) Moving right along. Yes a family vacation & we are so darn excited. Stephen decided to take an extra week off when we get back. SO we will stay in Kentucky (with the in-laws, which is where the kiddos will be while we are in NYC) for a few days and then we are going to hit the river. You heard it right folks… the river (OK, played out… scratch that last part) My aunt & uncle have offered us their place at the river. Remember… the place where my little ol’ heart is happy as can be?!? Yes, THAT ONE!
I’m so daggon excited (I think I already said that). This week is going to be busy though. I have to pack, clean, laundry, and STUDY. I have a test & my final this week... plus a few other things to do to get ready for the trip.
God is so good though. Through our fundraising (rummage sale & coffee sales) the entire trip is paid in full WITH spending money. And to think... I actually stood in front of the team during our first team meeting & told them NOT to count on the fundraising to bring ALL of the money in. Don't listen to me, what do I know?!?... oh yea of little faith. Thank you Jesus!
The trip will mostly be a work trip (soup kitchens, homeless shelters, under privileged kids etc.) We’ll also get the opportunity to share the gospel, pray for the sick… basically sharing the love of Jesus wherever we go! We partnered up with an organization called CSM. Our pastors have charged us with the task of bringing home as much useful knowledge as possible. So I plan to gain as much from the leadership of these different ministries as possible, with the hopes that we can implement some of it in our city!
I’m stoked about this trip & I know God is going to do some awesome things!
Even though I will be with Stephen on the trip there isn’t going to be much down time. Our week is pretty jam packed with ministry opportunities. SO I can’t wait to steal him from work the week after for our family vacation.
YIPPEE!

Saturday, May 2

Who knows what the purpose a yellow curb is anyway?

Stephen left Thursday after work to head to NYC for the weekend. We are currently in the midst of planning a missions trip to the city in August. Right now the team consist of 16 people, including me & him (is that proper grammar?). Anyway, I was SUPPOSED to be in NYC with him but we had some drama come up with Liv (whole other blog... everything is OK though) and we decided the best thing for me to do was stay home with the girls. I am now (maybe not so much at first) totally fine with the fact that I didn't get to spend the weekend alone with my hubby (& the babe) in my (so far) favorite city in the world... riding the subway & staring up at skyscrapers, taking in the beauty of Time Square, hitting Broadway... (OK, can you tell I'm not REALLY over it yet?... ARGH!) I did however enjoy a very lovely day with my parents & my 2 youngest. We went to a few yard sales & then hit a huge flea market right outside of Richmond. (SO not China town... OK, seriously, I'm over it) I really enjoyed that time with them today. My dad is a nut (again... a whole other blog).

So back to NYC... he had a meeting Friday AM with the missions organization that we are parterning up with. It was a pre-trip to discuss the details of the actual trip. He has family that live right across the river in Jersey, so he decided to stay the weekend to hang with then. He planned on getting up early this morning & meeting his cousin for a Broadway show & a nice day in Manhatten.

So, I get a text from him early this morning around 7:15. It goes something like this...

"I'm in Manhatten @ Starbucks reading my Bible & some crackheads just told me to stop reading my Bible & go check out the city. I guess it's obvious I'm a tourist."

So I respond something like....

"That's hilarious... they must have heard your accent when you ordered your coffee... lol"  (for those of you who don't know... My hubs still has his Eastern KY accent... love it!)

So I go about my merry way, totally trying to focus on my great day ahead & how it really is OK that I'm not up there with him... I'm about to hit my first yard sale when I get a 2nd text from my hubs...

"Can u get me the # to geico?" (this is our car insurance company)

1st thought that goes through my mind is... "Oh my God, he has gotten into an accident". Before I can totally freak out I get a 3rd text from him...

"Parking in front of yellow lines is bad."

I'm still a bit confused at this point.. & frantically begin dialing his number... NO ANSWER... are you kidding me?!? You crazy man, don't send me these kind of texts & then NOT answer your phone. Second try... he answers.

me: "Babe, what in the heck is going on?"

hubs: "um, I got towed"

(at this point I totally resist the urge to tell him... I TOLD YOU TO TAKE THE SUBWAY INTO MANHATTAN, but NOOOO what do I know?)

Instead, I kinda freak... thinking about him alone in the city with no car. He proceeds to tell me that he has to go to the police precinct to pay the ticket & then take the receipt to the tow company to get the car back... etc etc etc. Then, of course, the mother in me comes out..

"babe, please make sure when you get the car back & find a new parking spot that you get out & ASK a local if you are breaking any laws in your new spot. (I could have totally continued & said something like... "better yet... get out of the daggon city & do what I suggested in the first place & take the subway back in so you don't have to worry about those crazy city laws that lil city folk like us don't know about"... but I didn't, b/c that would not have been nice, edifying OR encouraging... a very bad wife thing to say... SO instead I will pretend like it's not just as bad to say it through my blog... Ahem (yes, I totally stole that from JD & MckMama... Ahem))

I really did feel horrible for him though. I LOVE the city, and he SO doesn't. My ideal vaction spot is fast paced, big city, so much to see, so much to do. His ideal vacation is a cabin in the woods. (Our life story... really) So I just KNEW he was going to get up there & just fall in love with it & want to go back as a family every year :) One of the first things he says to me as he walks 6 blocks to the police presinct... "I hate New York now!" ARGH... daggon police. I mean seriously... who knew you couldn't park in front of a yellow curb. Come on people... where is the sign?!?!

So anyway, he totally cracked me up with his last text...

"getting towed in manhattan... $185. 2 tix to a broadway show... $50. Havin 2 nyc crackheads tell u 2 stop readin ur Bible & go see da f*** city... priceless."

That, my friend, is hilarious!

30 Hours of Hunger

I'm so excited about an upcoming YAM event. We're calling it "30 Hours of Hunger". We are going to fast for 30 hours... start out w/ a prayer event Friday night & food prep, then Saturday head downtown w/ packed lunches, blankets, scarves, hats etc. (donated from the congregation) & then end with a praise service on Saturday night.  God gave me an idea for a video to help promote the event. The idea involved a homeless person interview. The hubby & I were going to head down to Monroe Park one day & offer to buy one of the homeless men coffee, we'd get to know him a bit & then ask if he wouldn't mind an interview on camera. With  kids, it's not so easy to just mosey on downtown w/o the little ones BUT the other day we were sitting in the work room at church & the receptionist came in and asked us what the 30 hours of Hunger was all about. We told her it was for the homeless & she said "well there is a homeless  guy up front if you want to interview him". My mouth dropped open. I thought it was so interesting that she used the word interview. Isn't it awesome how God works things out?!? This is going to be an awesome event! The video turned out GREAT. Good job babe!
